GRAVURE
A. — ,,Procédé de gravure qui consiste d'abord à grener la surface d'une plaque de métal, à l'aide d'un outil, d'un jet de sable ou d'un acide, puis à écraser le grain ainsi obtenu, aux endroits que l'on désire éclairer, l'encre ne demeurant, lors de l'impression, qu'aux endroits grenés`` (BÉG. Dessin 1978). Synon. manière noire (v. manière C 1 b).

1. Support utilisé pour cette technique. En 1897, la société d'impression Bruckmann de Munich utilisait des plaques planes appelées mezzo-tinto (Civilis. écr., 1939, p.10-10).
